The creator of the “Battle Royale” has revealed “Prologue: Go Wayback!” and a new tech demo.
Brendan Greene, the original creator of the battle royale game mode that later became PlayerUnknown Battlegrounds (PUBG), has revealed a three-game plan for his studio, PLAYERUNKNOWN Productions.
That plan has started with the announcement of Prologue: Go Wayback and the launch of a free tech demo called Preface: Undiscovered World on Steam. This tech demo paints a picture of the third game in their plan, the upcoming, massive multiplayer sandbox experience project ‘Artemis’.
Let’s look at each of the titles coming from PLAYERUNKNOWN Productions and what we know about them!
Prologue: Go Wayback!
The first title in the series, Prologue: Go Wayback!, is a single-player, open-world, emergent game within the survival genre. Utilizing in-house machine-learning-driven terrain generation technology, allowing for instant creation of in-game maps. Eager players will be able to join the community in the early development of Prologue with multiple playtests, followed by an early access launch on Steam in Q2 of 2025. To stay up to date on test dates and other news, Prologue: Go Wayback! is available to wishlist now.
Preface: Undiscovered World
PLAYERUNKNOWN Productions has also launched a free tech demo, Preface: Undiscovered World. This demo showcases the studio’s in-house engine, ‘Melba’ at work. This demo is available on Steam and provides a first look at the tech that will power titles in the series and eventually Project Artemis.
Studio founder Brendan Greene said, “In Preface, users can witness an Earth-scale world generated in real-time by our machine learning agents directly on their GPU. This digital planet is still quite empty for now, but every person who enters it and shares their feedback contributes to its future development.”
Project Artemis
‘Artemis’ is the final goal for the studio. Greene said, “My vision for Artemis is challenging, but we plan to take it one step at a time, and the three games aim to give us a solid tech foundation on which to scale up. After Prologue, two more games are planned for release in the coming years, each addressing critical technical challenges that will bring the studio closer to the final product. With Prologue, we aim to engage players and introduce them to the emergent mechanics and expansive worlds we’re developing.”
Interested players can join the PLAYERUNKNOWN Productions Discord and be involved in the beginning of the studio’s long journey. The team is hard at work on the technology powering these experiences and is looking for excited gamers who would like to share feedback, discuss, and get involved in the development process and playtests.
